| Plan of Action- Treatment Options |

Treatment plans for alcoholism, or problem drinking can vary between one person and another. One of the most important factors is the person needs to make the choice for themselves. Often people will convince a friend or loved one to get help for their problem drinking. The person reluctantly may seek help, but if they do not want to quit on their own, chances are they will not quit or will suffer relapse. Most people will not seek out help until they have hit rock bottom, or suffered a serious event in their lives. i.e. accident, legal issue, threat of job loss, loss of spouse etc.
For the most part treatment options vary and are dependant on how serious the addiction is. Often people do well just by talking about their problem with an addiction specialist. One to one therapy or group therapy is options. If the person is a full blown alcoholic then the chances are they will need to go through detox. It can be dangerous for a person that is use to drinking alcohol to the point of impairment everyday to suddenly up and quit drinking. The detoxification process can be a difficult time, and patients often suffer major withdrawal symptoms which can lead to emotional, physical and mental problems. It is for these reasons that there should always be an addiction or medical expert on hand to assist the individual in dealing with their problems, prescription medication may be necessary initially to assist with the side effects of quitting.
