| Stop Drinking for Yourself -
How To Stop Drinking Alcohol 101 |
| |
There are many excellent reasons to stop drinking, such as to improve your health, become more productive at work and to make family and friends happy. While these are all wonderful reasons to stop drinking, in the end you will find that you will have much more success in your quest to stop drinking if you do it for yourself.
You may have heard this in the past and while it might sound cliché to say that you have to stop drinking for yourself, there is also a lot of truth in this statement. Not your spouse, family, kids, significant other, boss or friends can make you stop drinking. They can ask you to stop drinking and even pressure you to stop drinking, but if you do not make the decision on your own to stop drinking, you will already be starting out at a disadvantage.
When you first decide to stop drinking, it is important to consider your own personal reasons for desiring to stop drinking. Consider writing down your thoughts. Let this be a guide as you work toward establishing some personal goals. Regardless of whether it is to stay completely away from events and functions where there may be drinking or whether you wish to stop drinking completely, be sure you know why you have made this decision. Ultimately, the decision to stop drinking must be for you and you alone and not for anyone else. If you try to stop drinking for someone else you will likely find it is much more difficult to succeed. You absolutely must make the decision stop drinking on your own and not simply because someone else wants you to do it.
The journey to stopping drinking can be long and difficult. You must be absolutely certain regarding your personal reasons for wanting to drink less or stop drinking altogether. Perhaps you have begun to notice the undesirable effects of drinking in your life. It may be affecting your personal and professional relationships. Your drinking may have started to have a negative impact on your appearance and/or your health. Whatever the reasons may be for wanting to stop drinking, write down your thoughts.
Remember, this is strictly for you. No one else will need to read this. Be honest about your reasons and why you have made the decision to stop drinking. Write down how you envision your life will be when you stop drinking and the difference it will make in your life when you are free from the addiction to alcohol. This can be incredibly helpful as you go forward in the process of stopping drinking. On days when you feel as though you really need a drink and when you are tempted to go back on your resolution to stop drinking, come back to this and read through why you originally decided to stop drinking. You may well find that reading your motivations and reasons to stop drinking is enough to inspire you to continue on the path of sobriety.
