| Reward yourself for Not Drinking -
How To Stop Drinking Alcohol 101 |
| |
Whether you are trying to lose weight or stop drinking, most experts will tell you that whenever you are trying to accomplish a goal it is important to reward yourself. This is an aspect of recovery that is often overlooked by many people. It is also an important element that should not be overlooked. Rewards are critical to the overall recovery process as they can help you to stay motivated.
The goal of quitting drinking is definitely not a sprint but is a marathon. Giving yourself rewards from time to time for sticking to your plan and not drinking can provide you with the inspiration and motivation you need to stay in the game. How often should you reward yourself? This is certainly an individual matter, but many people find that the more frequent they reward themselves the better they are able to stick to their goal of not drinking.
Rewarding yourself for not drinking can become much easier when you use the money that was once spent on drinking to do something else. For instance, you might consider taking the money and doing something fun with friends or family instead. Make sure whatever activity you choose it does not have anything to do with drinking and will not place you in a situation where there may be drinking or you might be tempted to drink.
For example, you might go out to eat or choose to see a game or a movie. If you have taken up a new hobby or activity as part of your plan to stop drinking you might take the money you would have spent on drinking and purchase something related to your hobby or interest. If you have taken up golf, consider purchasing a new club or treating yourself to a game on a course you have always wanted to play on. If you have decided to restore a classic care, purchase something you want for the car. Treat yourself to a shopping trip or buy something nice for your home. Whatever you decide upon, use it as an incentive to simply not drink. As you move forward, focus on what you will reward yourself with in the future for the next milestone you complete in your plan to not drink.
Keep in mind that rewards can be intangible as well as tangible. For each day or even each hour that you do not drink, remember to congratulate yourself. Do not overlook the importance of giving yourself the credit you richly deserve for possessing the strength necessary to quit drinking. At the same time, be sure to share those important victories with the people most important to you in your life; your family and friends.
Finally, visualize how you will look and feel in the future when you are completely free of the hold that alcohol has held in your life up to this point. Visualization can be extremely powerful in terms of helping you to make the correct decisions and remain free of alcohol as you go into the future.
