| |
The decision to stop drinking is an important one but it is also one that may take some time. Make it a point to keep your goals as well as your original reasons for deciding to quit drinking in mind. If you should happen to experience a relapse along the way and do have a drink, do not allow this to spoil your original goal. Simply get back on track the following day. Robert F. Kennedy once said "Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly."
While it is certain that no one ever wishes to fail and it is to be hoped that once you make the decision to stop drinking you will never encounter a failure, it also important to know how to cope with it if this should happen at some point in the future. If you truly desire to stop drinking you will be able to succeed.
Remember to avoid the temptation to think or even act as though you do not have any power regarding your goal to stop drinking. Keep in mind that alcohol cannot be consumed without your express consent so do not make the mistake of allowing yourself to become a victim of alcohol. You also should not make the mistake of falling into the mentality that you have no power over your temptation to drink. This simply an easy excuse that will allow you to fall back into the same old patterns and habits that led to your drinking in the first place.
In addition, do not allow a single mistake to ruin your personal resolve not to drink. Remember that anything worth having will take some time and some effort. Even if you have attempted to stop drinking in the past and have failed, it is critical that you make the attempt one more time. Keep on trying. Never give up. Regardless of how small the steps may be that you need to take, there is always something you can do to help reduce your addiction and dependence on alcohol. Follow the steps and tips in this guide. Consider your reasons for wanting to stop drinking. Institute healthy new habits and routines in your life. Get plenty of exercise. Take up new hobbies and new activities and pursuits. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. All of these things will help you to avoid temptations and develop a new approach to life that will help you to stop drinking and stay clear of alcohol.
Regardless of what you do, do not become angry with yourself even if you have a temporary setback. View it as just that-temporary. This type of approach is non-productive and will only make you more prone to giving up for good. If you happen to slip, put it behind you and then move on with the next phase of getting back on track and staying on track. The decision to quit drinking is a big challenge but it is one that you can meet!
