They frequently find that much of their schedule and even their lives revolved around drinking. It is certainly easy to see why when you stop to consider what an important role drinking has developed within our social structure. In much of society, business is conducted over drinks. You may need to attend cocktail parties as part of your professional life. Perhaps your boss expects you to meet with clients over drinks. Even in our personal lives, drinking is often an important aspect. We often celebrate important events and milestones with toasts or by sharing a glass of wine. Sporting events and drinking are often interrelated. Even when we just want to get together with friends it often involves drinking. The decision to suddenly stop drinking can significantly interfere with your regular routine.
In order to combat this problem it is important to learn how to institute a new daily routine that does not revolve around drinking alcohol. Try setting your alarm clock a little earlier and getting up a bit earlier. This is a great time to start a new exercise regimen. This can help you to lose weight and get in better physical shape while replacing some of the time you might have previously spent drinking with an activity that is good for you.
At the same time, consider other pursuits and activities that do not involve drinking. Take the money you would have devoted in the past to drinking and spend it on other interests or activities. Do something with friends, family or colleagues who support your decision to stop drinking. Consider activities and even hobbies that you have thought about taking up in the past but felt you never had the time or the money to pursue. Now is an excellent time to go after those dreams and find personal satisfaction from something beyond alcohol.
There is often a misconception that in order to have a good time you need to have a drink in your hand. There is absolutely no truth to this myth. There are plenty of ways you can have a good time and enjoy yourself without the need to drink. You might well be surprised at how much fun you can have without the need to drink alcohol.
Above all, steer away from situations and places where you might be tempted to start drinking again. This includes bars as well as events where you might run into drinking buddies who will not be supportive of your efforts to stop drinking. Spend your time with family and friends who are aware that you have decided to stop drinking and who fully support your decision to do so. There is plenty of life to be lived without the need to drink. You just have to go after it.
