| Determine Temptations and Steer Clear of Them
- How To Stop Drinking Alcohol 101 |
| |
One of the biggest challenges you may encounter as you work to quit drinking is avoiding temptations. No matter what your reasons for quitting drinking may be, one thing you can be certain of is that you will encounter temptations along the way. You may have a difficult time at work, a fight with a loved one or just feel down one day. Any of these situations may entice you to pick up a drink. You might find yourself being encouraged by your 'drinking buddies' or by someone else to take a drink.
When quitting drinking it is absolutely imperative that you determine the times and situations in which are most likely to drink. Give some thought to the times and situations in which you tend to drink. For example, are you most likely to drink at parties and/or in social settings? Or, perhaps you are more likely to drink when you are alone and consumed by your thoughts. Whatever the case may be, be sure you fully understand your personal temptations. Remember that what may be true for someone else may not be true for you. Do not overlook the importance of this step in your plans to stop drinking.
Being aware of your temptations will help you to be much more aware of your actions. Make it a point to be attentive to times, individuals, situations and even locations in which you will be more vulnerable to taking a drink.
Once you have determined the situations in which you will be more likely to drink you can then be proactive and develop a plan that will help you to combat these types of situations should you happen to encounter them in the future. Making a plan to help you avoid temptations, whether you are at a social event or at home can include a variety of strategies. For instance, you might consider locating a substitute drink other than alcohol that will help you to stick with your plan to quit drinking. This can be a good option if you are tempted to drink when you are in a social setting in which everyone else is drinking.
Remember that it is also important to replace your former drinking habits with activities and hobbies that are constructive to you in a personal manner. This might include painting, reading, playing a musical instrument, gardening, exercising or something else. There are many wonderful activities and pursuits that you can take up when you are not spending your time and money drinking. Pursuing such hobbies and activities can be a great way to combat the temptations you may feel as you continue along the path of stopping drinking.
Finally, as you work to combat the temptation to drink again, try to keep in mind the heartache and problems that going back to drinking can cause in your life. While you should certainly never dwell on past mistakes, recalling the difficulties that taking another drink can cause in your life can help you to develop the imperative resolve necessary to never return to that path again.
