| Build a Support Network |

While it is important that you stop drinking for yourself and not for others, it is also important that you build a support network. Do not try to stop drinking on your own without some type of outside help. This is precisely why so many people turn to organizations such as A.A. The quest to stop drinking is much more effective and successful when you have someone else to lean upon when you are trying to get sober.
The temptations associated with drinking can be immense. Even if you feel as though you are doing great one day, something may go wrong the next day and you will suddenly find yourself facing a tremendous temptation to have a drink. When you are left alone to your own thoughts and feelings it can be much easier to give into those thoughts and temptations. These are often the same thoughts and feelings that probably led to your drinking in the first place. Whether you first started drinking because of difficulties at work or in personal relationships or because of some other reason, there will likely come a day when you face the same problems once again and you will be tempted to start drinking again. Having a support network in place can help you to get past those temptations and stay sober.
Do not keep your plans to stop drinking bottled up inside. Make it a point to share your plan with others in your life who care about you. Discuss it with trusted friends and family members. Let them know how they can assist you in your quest to stop drinking. Do not hesitate to ask for support from your friends and family. Anyone who is truly supportive of your recovery efforts will certainly be glad to help you throughout difficult times, including important dates and holidays.
Be honest with friends and family about your thoughts and the temptations you face as you work toward quitting drinking. Discuss your concerns with them. Let them know when you are most tempted to drink. It can certainly be challenging at times to quit drinking. During difficult or trying times you will need a strong support system to help you get through those times. Allow your friends and family to help you. Remember the quote that "no man is an island." Do not be too proud to have others help you.
Be aware that if your acquaintances and family members also have a problem with drinking they may not support your decision to stop drinking. In fact, they may even try to dissuade you from quitting drinking. It is imperative that you make it a point to spend time with people who will support your decision and your goal of quitting drinking. This may mean making new friends and forming new interests or taking up new activities; however, you will find that doing so will be tremendously beneficial to you as you continue the journey to get sober and stay sober.
